5 Reasons You Should Be Hunting with a Muzzleloader

Is using a modern rifle getting old? Perhaps you’re looking to add another layer of challenge to your deer hunt? If you’re looking for more control over your shots or want a longer hunting season, you may try hunting with a muzzleloading rifle. While there’s much to appreciate about the convenience of modern firearms with Bushnell scopes, antique muzzleloaders can connect you to more traditional ways of hunting. Here are five reasons to try muzzleloader hunting.

Choose Antique-Style Rifles or Modern Inline Rifles With muzzleloading, you have two options: You can use antique or modern rifles. Antique flintlock and caplock rifles were developed when firearms were one-off pieces; each one was a work of art. However, you can also use modern inline rifles with a break to quickly load a primer. This makes it easier to load, though it’s not fast. If you want to use optics, modern rifles can offer optic mounts, perfect for Redfield scopes or other models. However, it can be a fun challenge to use a muzzleloader with iron sights. It can also help you improve your shot. One Shot, One Deer Because it takes so long to reload a muzzleloader, you have to make each shot count. This can instill discipline and good aim. That first shot is critical, as you likely won’t get a second shot. Muzzleloaders can help you develop skills that will transfer over to any other firearm you might use while hunting. More Time to Hunt Muzzleloaders—especially flintlock and caplock—may be allowed in an extended hunting season. This is typically a split season, starting early when deer are still in rut. It can then continue after the regular hunting season has ended when, due to the cold weather, animals are more active during the day. This period offers you an opportunity to hunt in the snow. Different Hunting Tactics Muzzleloaders are usually effective out to 150 or 200 yards, a fairly typical range for deer hunting. However, unlike modern rifles with longer effective ranges, this means you might be stalking a deer at a shorter range than you’re used to. It will take woodsmanship to understand how to get close and take a shot. In addition, there is a slight hang time before the bullet leaves the barrel, so you will have to prepare the shot and keep your sights aligned afterward. When you are looking down your Bushnell scopes, you need to be ready to take the shot, as you won’t get a follow-up. Get More Control Each shot is essentially a new hand load that you have to prepare, but it offers the opportunity for more control. When pouring in powder or a substitute, you can have your preferred grain count. You can even cast your own bullets if you want total control over accuracy. You might find that a muzzleloader offers you more accuracy than a modern rifle. About Natchez Shooters Supplies The team at Natchez Shooters Supplies are hunters, shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
