Bow, Rifle, or Shotgun: How to Choose the Right Tools for Fall Hunting

The two main animals commonly hunted in the fall are deer and turkey. In general, there are two options for hunting either deer or turkey: rifles and bows for deer and shotguns and bows for turkey. Here is a quick guide to your options for fall hunting, whether you are attaching Redfield scopes to rifles or filling a quiver with arrows.

Hunting Deer: Bolt-Action Rifles

If you are hunting deer, you have two options within the rifle category: bolt-action or semi-automatic. In general, bolt-actions are slower thanks to having to cycle the action after every shot manually, but with practice, you can still place a quick follow-up shot. Bolt-action shots can be slightly more accurate, thanks to not having to factor the action automatically cycling. You can also have larger rounds than a semi-automatic rifle, such as 30-06. Bolt-action rifles definitely benefit from putting optics, such as Bushnell scopes, on for better effective range.

Hunting Deer: Semi-Automatic Rifles

From 22 LR to 223, the semi-automatic rifle is also a popular choice for hunting deer. These could look like grandpa’s rifle, such as the Ruger 10/22, or could be modern, such as the AR platform. The latter are usually very modular, with plenty of after-market parts and accessories for customization. They also come in a variety of calibers, which can help if you are hunting more than deer during the year. Semi-automatic rifles also benefit from having magnification, such as from Redfield scopes, but are also equally capable with a red dot sight or a holographic sight.

Hunting Turkey: Shotguns

The firearm of choice for hunting turkey is the shotgun. Both 12 and 20 gauge will work, and some 410 loads are also usable for turkey hunting. Generally, hunters will use a choke for their shotgun to keep the pattern tight, and many shotguns come with a designated turkey choke. This makes it closer to using a rifle than when hunting for waterfowl. The goal is to have the pellets all hit the head and neck, which requires a tight pattern. Both pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns are ideal for turkey hunting, though single-shot or double-barrel shotguns can also do the job.

Hunting Deer and Turkey: Bows

The other option for hunting both deer and turkey is the humble bow. It’s quiet and highly maneuverable but takes more skill and strength, and you likely won’t have as many arrows as you would ammo for either a rifle or shotgun. A compound bow is best for beginners as it requires less draw strength. While carbon arrows are fast, aluminum arrows are good for using with broad heads, which attach to the arrow and have several sharp blades. It will cause less tissue damage and bruising, which is good if you are hunting for food.
