Ready to Move: What You Should Pack in a Go Bag

In an emergency situation, it can help to have a “go bag” ready and at least mostly packed. The goal, of course, is to never need it, but it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. The aim of the go bag is to have everything you need for a quick exit, such as when there’s a fire or natural disaster that forces you to exit your home. You can customize your own bag, but these are some basics that you will want to have in a medium-sized bag. Most of what you want to bring can be stored in the bag, but some things, such as important documents or rifles with Bushnell scopes, may be something you need to grab separately.

Non-Perishable Food Your go bag should have non-perishable food where possible, preferably a three-day supply per person. Canned goods, such as tuna, are a great option, though heavy. Also bring jerky, applesauce, granola bars, and peanut butter. Water Bottles Bring water bottles if possible. You will need a supply of water, and some way to filter water to refill the bottles. This could be a filter straw, another filtration device, or a few of the basic tools you need to boil water. Medical Supplies Medical and hygiene supplies are important for a go bag, as you don’t know what situation will cause you to need it. A basic first aid kit with bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment or cream, adhesive tape, splints, scissors, and tweezers is a good start. Also carry antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, and medications such as over-the-counter pain medications and your prescriptions. A Rifle with a Scope Having rifles with Redfield scopes ready to go can provide both protection as well as the ability to hunt from a distance. With multiple rifles, you can have multiple calibers, such as 5.56 or 30-06. Don’t forget to have ammo packed. This could be in the form of magazines if your rifle has detachable mags, or an ammo box. Be warned that these will add more weight, and boxes should be taken separately. Extra Clothing Pack at least one or two extra outfits to fit the season and your area’s weather. Bring an extra pair of shoes, as well. Consider the temps and season as you pack or revisit your go bag throughout the year to make sure you have appropriate items such as hats or warmer clothing. Other Practical Items There’s a wide variety of practical items you can take. Some include a flashlight, duct tape, a solar-powered radio, a crank flashlight, a Swiss Army knife or multitool, a can opener, waterproof matches, utensils and a plate, a sleeping bag per person, and sunscreen, as well as paper and pens or pencils.
